Developing Youth Coaches at FPA

Posted by Paul Mulligan | 22nd May 2019

At Football Pathway Australia, we are not just passionate about developing our young players football and life skills but also developing young up and coming coaches.

We empower them to find a pathway in football to pass on their knowledge and love of the game to our young players.

We have many young coaches, and just like with our players it is brilliantly rewarding to see these young coaches grow in confidence week in week out. Seeing their coaching points gain more clarity, their personalities and sense of humour come out in sessions is so rewarding We know that creating a balance of fun and seriousness to our sessions is benefiting everybody, coaches and players alike.

We feel the young coach, with such enthusiasm for the game is a perfect role model for the kids.

We do not over-complicate our sessions, always with lots of game time and 1 main topic being focused on in the technical part of the session, and game constants coached in the games. We want our coaches to coach with humour and personality but also in a strong professional manner. Having Full-time coaches at FPA gives us time to correctly mentor our young coaches and not throw them in the deep end which often happens at other academies where they may be desperate for staff to take sessions. This often hinders a coach from reaching their coaching potential as they are confronted or burdened with too much responsibility too early.

As with a young player on the verge of the 1st team, it is good to slowly get them used to the team and standard by slowly coming off the bench at the right time, but as with football if you're good enough you are old enough, and we are happy to have a great young coach lead sessions if they have the knowledge, personality and confidence.

It is particularly pleasing seeing a young coach who was a player in our system now coaching young players in our program. It really does help us create that family and sense of continued loyalty that we believe makes us different from the rest. We constantly want to re-invest to the game that we love.
